Although the adage of not being able to teach an old dog new tricks is somewhat true, there are some basic dog training steps you can take to make your canine more obedient.  Obviously, there are several ways to train a dog, but here is a quick list of five things you can start doing today to better train your puppy or dog.

The first thing we want to make sure you know as the owner and master is that there are two types of dog training….obedience dog training and behavioral dog training.   Behavioral dog training corrects or prevents the bad habits of your canine that he or she has previously developed or could develop in the future.  Some examples would be barking when someone enters the home, climbing on the furniture, digging in the garbage.  This behavioral training is extremely important and the key is to be consistent throughout your training.   If you do not want your pet to sleep in bed with you, then don’t ever start.  Training your dog to sleep in a crate is an example of behavioral training.

Dog obedience training is training your dog to listen to your commands.  Examples would be getting your dog to sit or stay, to roll over, or attack possible enemies if that is what you are hoping to accomplish.  This type of dog obedience training should occur frequently with short sessions to achieve the most success.  Just like you, your dog can become tired or bored if you are working on the same skill for too long.  Try to do a session a day for 5 to 15 minutes for the most benefit.  Training prior to feeding time is a great way to really hold your dogs attention.
